Open Access in MALMAD Agreements

Overview

MALMAD actively negotiates Read & Publish (R&P) agreements, empowering libraries to support students, academics, and researchers by providing valuable scholarly content. Additionally, these agreements allow authors to publish open access immediately upon acceptance. Under the MALMAD framework, participating institutions centrally cover publishing costs. However, it’s important to note that not all institutions participate in every agreement, and some may have additional open access publishing arrangements. Consequently, the availability of journals without or with discounted Article Processing Charges (APCs) for authors can vary across different institutions.

Corresponding author and affiliation
To be eligible to publish open access under a MALMAD agreement, the corresponding author* must have an affiliation with a participating institution. This requirement holds true across all agreements, regardless of the publisher or journal involved. Additionally, since publishers often identify eligible articles based on the email domain name, it’s advisable for the corresponding author to consistently use their institutional email address when submitting a manuscript.

*A corresponding author is the person who handles the manuscript and communication with the publisher during the publication process.

Article types and additional charges
In most agreements open access publishing is restricted to review and original research articles. Other article types e.g. letters, editorials, book reviews etc. are normally not included the agreements.
Additional charges, such as page or colour charges are not covered by the agreements.
